Carcinoma of the Colon and Rectum in Young Patients

Abstract
Carcinoma of the colon and rectum, although common in older people, is rare in the younger population and the carcinoma of the colon and rectum in younger patients raised special interest with regard to its unfavorable prognosis. In this regard, author have reviewed 17, patients of the carcinoma of the colon and rectum younger than 30 years of age, which had been confirmed histologically and treated surgically from 1971 to May 7975 at the Department of General Surgery, the Capital Armed Forces General Hospital.
The results obtained as follow:
1. 2 patients were 19 to 20 years of age, 15 patients were 21 to 30 Years of age.
2. In 12 of the 17 patients (70%) were admitted- to the hospital within 4 months of their initial symptom and 80% were within 6 months.
3. There ware 7 patients (41%) in whom an incorrect diagnosis were made, Hemorrhoids (2), Amebic colitis (2), Peptic ulcer perforation (1), Acute appendicitis perforation (1), and Intestinal obstruction (1).
4. The diagnosis of carcinoma of the colon and rectum was made by digital examination combined with signoidoscopy in 80%
5. The distribution of the lesions were as follows: Rectum (10), Sigmoid (2), Transverse colon (2), Ascending colon (1), Cecum (1).
6. There were 3 cases of emergency operation, two were acute peritonitis and one was intestinal obstruction.
7. The operability was 94%, the resectability was 47%, but the curative resectability was only 23.5%
8. All was adenocarcincma. Of 17 patients, 15 patients had tumor metastases to the regional lymph nodes and 8 patients had distant metastases.
